Des Carty Sessions 2007
Wednesday 24th - Monday 29th October

Planning for the 2007 SESSIONS is in full swing and we have already secured some of the finest musicians in the country and beyond for our recitals and workshops this year. We welcome back some old friends of the festival, Steve Cooney, Rick Epping, Paul Kelly, Tom Moran, Liam Kennedy, Laoise Kelly and Austin Waring. New faces this year will include the great Sean Keane, a regular supporter of the Sessions who will play his first set for us this year; Paddy Glackin, an abiding stalwart and champion of Irish traditional music, not to mention one of the finest fiddle players in the country, has had links with Alternative Entertainments stretching back to our beginnings 25 years ago and we're delighted to have him perform this year; the influential duo Ronan Browne & Peadar McLoughlin; box player Vincent McGrath; Nepalese musicians Hiralal & Ramji Gandarbha, originally from Katmandu and now based in Lisdoonvarna; and Indian vocalist Shweta Joshi. More to be announced soon.

Click here to visit our new Des Carty Sessions site. It is still a work in progress but a good deal of this year's festival schedule is up there.

On Thursday May 3rd at 8.00pm in Celbridge Commmunity Library Alternative Entertainments brings together three of the finest harpists in the country and two legendary accompanists and solo performers in their own right for a Harp Recital. Kathleen Loughnane, Paul Dooley, Laoise Kelly, Steve Cooney and Alec Finn all perform on the evening. There will be no cover charge but booking is essential. Contact Marianne at 01-6272207.

Manus McGuire (fiddle) and Denis Carey (Keyboards) play in Saggart Heritage & Arts Centre oN Saturday 10th May at 8.00pm. Manus hails from Sligo and his mastery of the fiddle became apparent early in life when, at the age of 14, he won the prestigious Fiddler of Dooney competition. He has recorded ten albums - solo and with groups such as Buttons & Bows, the Brock McGuire Band and Moving Cloud. His latest solo album, Fiddlewings, was released last year.

Des Carty Sessions 2006
Friday 27th - Monday 30th October

Folk music legend Jim Rooney returns this year for our country/bluegrass recital on Sunday 29th. He'll be joined by autoharp player Chris Twomey, and by local bluegrass favourites the Niall Toner Band. We will also feature performances by Charlie Piggott; Jamsie Byrne; Maurice Lennon; Gay, Conor & Sean McKeon; Edel McWeaney; and Gavin Whelan this October. There will be more to come.

More great musicians confirmed for Des Carty Sessions '06:
In addition to the artists listed above we can now add Paul Roche, flute player and co-founder with Maurice Lennon of Stockton's Wing. Paul and Maurice will play a set together on the opening night of the festival, Friday 27th October. On Sunday 29th, during our country/bluegrass recital Chris Twomey of Cork's Lee Valley String Band will add his voice and autoharp playing to the proceedings. We are delighted that three of the finest singers in the country will perform for us over the weekend - Kevin Conneff of Chieftains fame; Brian Mullen, popular broadcaster with Radio Foyle and RTE Radio 1; and Sean Garvey, currently Udaras na Gaeltachta's Traditional Singer-in-Residence in Cahirciveen.

Tony MacMahon, accordion player, broadcaster, composer, journalist and archivist wil perform a set with long-time playing partner Steve Cooney at this year's closing concert. The duos exciting and masterful sets always ensure a great evening's music and an enthusiastic following wherever they play.

The St Mary's Set Dancers from Saggart have organised a ceili for the Sunday afternoon, 3pm-6pm, during the festival. It will be held in St Mary's GAA Hall in Pairc Mhuire, Saggart, and will feature The Glenside Ceili Band.

For the first time at the Sessions we will run informal sessions in the local pubs. They will take place in The Poitin Stil, Rathcoole and Jacob's, Saggart on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoons from 4.30pm. All musicians welcome to join in.

Our classes this year will be given by Steve Cooney (guitar), James Byrne & Edel McWeaney (fiddle), and Gavin Whelan (tin whistle).
